Robin laid an egg

The Power of Christmas Songs

Kyle Besser

Of all the seasons and holidays in the year, Christmas is possibly the most celebrated holiday throughout the world. We usually know the season is near when we start to hear those familiar Christmas songs, such as White Christmas, being played in practically every store we step into. Of all the celebrated holidays, Christmas is the one holiday that has songs written specifically in celebration of it. Christmas songs have a special way of cheering the spirit and putting people in that special Christmas mood.

There are some well-known Christmas songs that are known throughout the world such as, Silent Night, Jingle Bells, O Little Town of Bethlehem, and White Christmas. There are many compositions of the songs. Some Christmas songs are upbeat, and other Christmas songs have a more classical tone to them. One thing that remains is the words, or lyrics, of the Christmas songs.

In ancient times, the apostles would sing songs or praise based on psalms and would sing these songs to the masses as a form of teaching. These days, as we listen to the lyrics of Christmas songs they have meanings to them. Some Christmas songs, such as Christ is Born in Bethlehem, We Three Kings, Silent Night, or Angels We Have Heard on High are songs that tell the story of the birth of Jesus. Other Christmas songs tell the tale of Santa Claus and his reindeers, such as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer or The Night Before Christmas.

Almost all Christmas songs, no matter the time of year that it is played, bring a feeling of good cheer to those who hear it. There is something about Christmas songs that bring a feeling of happiness, and uplift our spirits. It could possibly be linked to our childhood, when we would learn these songs knowing that Christmas was arriving and presents would soon be placed under the tree if we were on our best behavior.

Christmas somehow brings the best out in many of us. Christmas is a time of happiness, good cheer, good will, and charity. There is just something about Christmas that causes us to become more caring and giving towards others.

As with any music, Christmas songs can lighten your mood, entertain you, and uplift you. That is often why some people prefer not to listen to Christmas songs only during the Christmas season, but throughout the year. However, there is something special about listening to Christmas songs only during the Christmas season, as they may lose their touch if heard throughout the year. Whatever the season though, Christmas songs will always bring a bit of cheer to anyone.

South Park Christmas Songs

Kyle Besser

When we think of Christmas songs we immediately thing of cheerful, fun, and uplifting songs. Often there are songs where the lyrics have been changed, or maybe the melody of the song has been altered. So it is not much of a surprise to discover that the lyrics of a well-known Christmas song have been changed or the music redone. However, when a very well-known cartoon, South Park, created their own music and lyrics for the shows that would air during the Christmas season, there were some people who were not very happy with the songs that were sung.

The South Park Christmas songs that were sung were controversial, singing about the different religious beliefs throughout the world and condemning them for not celebrating Jesus' birth. The South Park Christmas songs include bad language and offending lyrics. One such song titled "A lonely Jew on Christmas" has lyrics that describe the unhappiness of a Jewish boy who wants to be able to celebrate Christmas but then is later told that he should be happy that he does not have to participate in the Christmas celebrations, such as sitting on a fake Santa's lap, spending Christmas with an alcoholic family and having to be on his best behavior.

While many may find the lyrics of the South Park Christmas songs offensive and rude, others will find the same songs quite funny and entertaining. It all depends on who you are and how you perceive things. Most people found it especially offensive because none of the South Park Christmas songs inspired the good Christmas cheer that Christmas songs are known for. The South Park Christmas songs were new and controversial and really only thrived amoung those who were avid watchers of South Park. Those who took no offence to the lyrics of the South Park Christmas songs, found the songs to be quite enjoyable and funny.

If you are not familiar with the South Park Christmas songs and you would like to listen to them or read the lyrics, they are available on the internet, posted on South Park websites. The episodes that featured the Christmas songs are available on DVD and are often shown during the Christmas season as re-runs.

South Park Christmas songs may be offensive to most, and humorous to others. If you have never listened, or read the lyrics to the Christmas songs, it is recommended that you do before downloading or buying. By doing so, you will know what other forms of Christmas songs are available on the market during the Christmas season.

If buying Christmas music from a music store is not something you wish to do, or if you do not want to spend money on Christmas songs, there is the option to download free Christmas songs off the internet. The internet has many sites dedicated to Christmas with Christmas songs that are available to download. With some search, you may find a website that will be perfect for your needs.

To download free Christmas songs, you will have to search the internet for a website that will offer the option to download free Christmas songs. Be careful, as there are many websites that charge a fee to download Christmas music but not as many sites that allow you to download free Christmas songs. You may have to search harder for a site that will allow you to download the songs for free as the websites make profit from the advertising and not the music itself.

Finding the right Christmas songs to download could be difficult, as the sites that allow you to download free Christmas songs usually have a small selection of songs to choose from. The sites that offer the Christmas songs download at a price may have more of a variety of songs to choose from and may be more ideal for the Christmas songs you wish to download. Be careful you don't end up downloading ones that are not free.

If you are searching for the traditional Christmas songs, such as Jingle Bells, Silent Night, White Christmas or Away in a Manger, they will almost always be available at sites that allow you to download free Christmas songs. If you are searching for songs that are not as common, such as Blue Christmas, Let It Snow or Nuttin' for Christmas, they may prove to be more difficult to find to download for free. If the Christmas songs that you are searching for are part of the soundtrack of a movie, it may be extremely hard to find them on a site that will allow you to download them for free.

If you are determined to download Christmas songs for free, it will be worth the time it takes to search and find a site that will allow you to download Christmas songs for free. Just be careful. Some sites that claim they are free, will try to get you to sign up and pay a monthly membership fee to download songs. Traditional Christmas Songs

Kyle Besser

Many of the Christmas songs lyrics that we still love today were written during the 18th century.

"Away in a Manger"

The first two verses were originally published in a Lutheran Sunday School book in 1885. Two years later James Murray published it as "Luther's Cradle Hymn" which spawned the dichotomy that Luther created it. The lyrics are usually considered American anonymous. Some credit the music to Murray while others think he merely harmonized the words of an old German folk song. The tune closely follows the Scottish song "Flow Gently Sweet Afton."

"Away in a Manger" Lyrics:

Away in a manger
No crib for his bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down his sweet head
The stars in the heaven
Looked down where he laid
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay.

"Hark, the Herald Angels Sing"

This Christmas carol melds the work of two composers a century apart. Written in 1739 by Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley who founded the Methodist church, the carol's lyrics were set to slow, somber music. In 1840, Felix Mendelssohn created a cantata celebrating the invention of the printing press. William H. Cummings, a British musician, then adapted music from Mendelssohn's second chorus of this cantata to Wesley's lyrics, resulting in the version of this popular Christmas carol that is loved today.

"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" Lyrics:

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Glory to the new born king!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled.

"Silent Night"

The music and Christmas songs lyrics of "Silent Night" have made it one of the most popular of Christmas carols. The lyrics were originally written as a poem by Austrian priest, Joseph Mohr, in 1816. When the church organ broke on Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr rushed to his friend Franz Xavier Gruber, who was a guitarist, and asked him to set the poem to music. The poem was transformed into lyrics, and Gruber composed its music and played it on his guitar for Midnight Mass.

"Silent Night" Lyrics:

Silent Night, Holy Night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin
Mother and child
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent Night, Holy Night
All is calm, all is bright
Shepherds quake at the sight
Holy infant so tender and mild
Christ our Saviour is born
Christ our Saviour is born

Christmas Songs For Children

Kyle Besser

The Christmas season is probably every child's favorite holiday. One memorable thing about the the Christmas season is the music, including children's Christmas songs that are sung by almost every child. Children know a lot of the traditional Christmas songs, but there are many Christmas songs that are aimed especially towards children that they enjoy the most. Most children will remember the lyrics of children's Christmas songs throughout their life.

Most children learn the traditional Christmas songs, such as Silent Night and Away in a Manger and sing them during school Christmas plays, nativity scenes, or concerts. They also learn to sing the more memorable children's Christmas songs such as Frosty The Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth, and other children's Christmas songs. These songs are often included in the soundtrack of Christmas movies, and the children tend to remember them more when they associate them with something fun that they have watched.

Children also remember songs with lyrics that are funny or witty. When the lyrics to traditional songs, such as Jingle Bells, are changed to some funny memorable lyrics, children will sing the Christmas funny songs more often and remember it better. For example Jingle Bells is traditionally sung:

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells
Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh

But children tend to remember the song when the lyrics are changed to:

Jingle Bells, Batman Smells
Robin laid an egg
The batmobile lost its wheel and the Joker ran away

By changing the lyrics and keeping the music of the song the same, the children will more likely remember the Christmas funny songs. The lyrics to some of the children's Christmas songs are a bit controversial, as some people may feel that changing the words to traditional songs with more fun memorable lyrics is offensive and disrespectful. Others feel Christmas is all about having fun, being happy and having a few laughs with the traditional Christmas songs is nothing more than part of the enjoyment of the festive holiday mood.

Some ways of helping the children to remember children's Christmas songs is by turning the songs into some form of a game. For example, by using the lyrics for The Twelve Days of Christmas, you can have the children make or find something that is symbolic to each day and have them drop it at a neighbor's door each day, starting twelve days before Christmas. To make it more enjoyable for the child, have them do it in secret so that the neighbors have no idea who is dropping off the gifts each night. By doing this, the child will never forget the words to this children's Christmas song.

Familiar Christmas Songs

Christmas songs are as diverse and varied as the individuals that listen to them. The number of Christmas songs recorded over the years is staggering. More than any other holiday during the year, Christmas definitely has the most songs.

As soon as thanksgiving is over, radio stations across the country start playing the Christmas classics along with new ones. You realize just how many Christmas songs there are, when you can listen to one radio station for days and not hear any Christmas carols and songs repeated.

There are wonderful classic Christmas songs that many people grew up hearing and still listen to today because they are timeless. Here are some interesting facts you probably never knew about the top holiday songs:

* The Christmas songs "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" were both recorded in 1934.

* St Francis of Assisi was who introduced Christmas carols to the church's formal services.

* The most recorded Christmas song is "White Christmas." There are over 500 recordings of this song in many different languages. Bing Crosby's version of "White Christmas" is the biggest selling single of all time.

* "Sleigh Ride" was an instrumental piece played in 1948 at the Symphony Hall in Boston. The lyrics were added in 1949 by Mitchell Parish.

* Three Christmas songs that were introduced in movies were "White Christmas" in the motion picture "Holiday Inn" in 1942, "Silver Bells" in the motion picture "The Lemon Drop Kid" in 1950 and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from "Meet Me in St. Louis" in 1944.

* Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas songs in England from 1649 to 1660 because he though Christmas should be a solemn day.

* On Christmas Eve at midnight in 1914, the Germans stopped firing from the trenches. The German brass band played Christmas songs. The allied soldiers and German soldiers shook hands early Christmas day, and the truce lasted a couple of days. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged cigarettes as presents and even played soccer.

Every year we hear new Christmas songs along with the old Christmas carol songs that we love no matter how often we hear them played. Driving in the car or listening to Christmas carol songs on the radio makes us reach over, turn the Christmas carol songs up and sing along.

As children, many of us can remember going door to door in the snow singing Christmas carols and songs. We know the words to "Jingle Bells," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Silver Bells." Children today still sing these Christmas songs at their school concerts. On Christmas Eve, you hear beautiful Christmas songs such as "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and "Joy to the World."

The wonderful thing about Christmas songs music is that we never tire of listening to them.
